History
Rio Negro is a very remote Maya Achi village tucked away in the mountains of Baja Verapaz, Guatemala. In the early 1980's, Rio Negro residents suffered 5 massacres. Half of the people of the village were murdered in cold blood. Survivors hid in the mountains for years, and the village became a ghost town. They eventually were relocated to a government housing project named Pacux (pronounced "Pa Koosh"). In 1991, a few brave families moved back to rebuild Rio Negro. Many stayed in Pacux and struggle daily to survive.
